Evaluating Sources of Health Information
Making good choices about your own health requires reasonable evaluation. A key first step in bettering your evaluation ability is to look carefully at your sources of health information. Reasonable evaluation includes knowing where and how to find relevant information, how to separate fact from opinion, how to recognize poor reasoning, and how to analyze information and the reliability of sources.【B1】______
Go to the original source. Media reports often simplify the results of medical research. Find out for yourself what a study really reported, and determine whether it was based on good science. Think about the type of study.【B2】______
Watch for misleading language. Some studies will find that a behavior “contributes to“ or is “associated with“ an outcome: this does not mean that a certain course must lead to a certain result.【B3】______ Carefully read or listen to information in order to fully understand it.
Use your common sense. If a report seems too good to be true, probably it is. Be especially careful of information contained in advertisements.【B4】______ Evaluate “scientific“ statements carefully, and be aware of quackery(江湖骗术).
【B5】______Friends and family members can be a great source of ideas and inspiration, but each of us needs to find a healthy lifestyle that works for us.
Developing the ability to evaluate reasonably and independently about health problems will serve you well throughout your life.
[A]Make choices that are right for you.
[B]The goal of an ad is to sell you something.
[C]Be sure to work through the critical questions.
[D]And examine the findings of the original research.
[E]Distinguish between research reports and public health advice.

Mark: What happened?
Linda: A car knocked down the roadside barrier and then run into a tree.
Mark: How come? Was the driver drunk?

Mark: Was he speeding then?

Mark: That’ s curious. Then why did he lose control of the car?
Linda: Because the truck right in front, which was loaded with large boxes, suddenly dropped a box onto the ground. Trying to avoid hitting the box, the driver turned left sharply, which was lucky, because there are five or six people on the side walk on the right.
Mark: Oh! That was scary. Was the driver hurt?
Linda: Yes, but not badly. Witnesses called the police and the driver was brought to the hospital. He suffered from some bruises but otherwise, he’ s Okay.
Mark: What a lucky escape!
Linda: Yes, it was really dangerous. And the police are still trying to find out who should be responsible for the accident.

Driving cars, trucks and motorcycles is an important part of our lives. We do it every day to get to work, to school or to friends’ houses.
Driving can be very convenient, but can also cause many problems. Waiting in line at a red light, a driver may get impatient and decide just to drive right through it. If another car is coming from the other direction, there might be a terrible accident. Cutting another car off can make its driver angry, so that driver cuts off someone else. Pretty soon everybody is angry, and impatient.
Traffic accidents decline millions of lives every year worldwide. In Taiwan alone, over seven people are killed in accidents every day. The annual death rate(年死亡率)from traffic accidents in Taiwan is twice that of Japan.
To allow traffic to move smoothly and safely, everybody must follow the rules. Before you drive, learn all the traffic laws. That way of driving is safe, convenient and even fun!

Reading is not the only way to gain knowledge of the work in the past. There is another large reservoir(知识库)which may be called experience, and the college student will find that every craftsman(工匠)has something he can teach and will generally teach gladly to any college student who does not look down upon them. But the demonstration(示范)and report of what happens, and how it happens are correct even if the reports are in completely unscientific terms(术语). Presently the college student will learn, in this case also, what to accept and what to reject.
Another source of knowledge is the vast store of traditional practices handed down from father to son, or mother to daughter, of old country customs, of folklore(风俗). All this is very difficult for a college student to examine, for much knowledge and personal experience is needed here to separate good plants from wild grass. The college student should learn to realize and remember how much of real value science has found in this wide, confused wilderness.

Thousands of years ago man used handy rocks for his surgical operations. Later he used sharp bones or horns, metal knives and more recently, rubber and plastic. In the 1960s a new tool was developed, one which was, first of all, to be of great practical use to the armed forces and industry, but which was also to revolutionize the art and science of surgery.
The tool is the laser and it is being used by more and more surgeons all over the world. As we all know, light is hot, and any source of light will give warmth. But light is usually spread out over a wide area. The light in a laser beam, however, is concentrated. This means that a light with no more power than that produced by an ordinary electric light bulb becomes intensely strong as it is concentrated to a pinpoint-sized beam.
Experiments with these pinpoint beams showed researchers that different energy sources produce beams that have a particular effect on certain living cells. It is now possible for eye surgeons to operate on the back of human eye without harming the front of the eye, simply by passing a laser beam right through the eye-ball. Operations which once left patients exhausted and in need of long period of recovery time now leave them feeling relaxed and comfortable.
The rapid development of laser techniques in the past ten years has made it clear that the future is likely to be very exciting. Perhaps some cancers will be treated with laser in a way that makes surgery not only safer but also more effective.
