Why did the boss shout at the man?W: Hello, Jack. How did your first day at the office go? M: It didn’t go well at all, I must say. W: Why? What happened? M: Well, for one thing, I was eight minutes late and the boss shouted at me. And he made me work hard all day. He wouldn’ t let me take a coffee break. He had me sit at my desk all the time J W: Were you asked to do overtime? M: No. We all left the office at five. W: Well, that’ s not too bad. What do the other people at the office think of the boss? M: They say he’ s very strict with new employees. But if you work hard and don’ t waste time, he’ s pretty easy to get along with. The man was careless. The man was late for work. The man took a coffee break.
When does this conversation take place?M: Hi, Julie. What a surprise to see you! Are you having breakfast? W: As a matter of fact, I am. M: I hear you got a new job. W: Yes, I work as a researcher at The Times newspaper. M: Do you spend most of your time at the library? W: Oh, no. I do all my research on the computer. M: Really? How does it work? W: I use the library’ s online files to get information. There’ re more than 2, 000 files for computer users. All you need is a computer. M: What kinds of files are there? W: Some are very specific, such as weather information. Some are more general, such as information on business, law, government, medicine, and many other areas. M: I’ m so glad I talked to you today. I think I’ll see which files would help my company the most. In the morning. In the afternoon. In the evening.

David: But you’ re now the Director of the Air Quality Institute, so you【K10】______know the technical terms. Susan: Maybe. But I still can’t understand totally a lot of technical terms in my field.
What is the probable relationship between the speakers?M: Hello, are you Tiffany? I’ m John. The manager sent me to help you out with setting the tables. W: Oh, yes. I’ ve just finished cleaning all the dirty dishes from the tables. I’ll need you to help me change the dirty tablecloths for clean ones. Then I’ll teach you how to fold those pieces of paper before we put knives and forks on. M: OK. But first, where should I put the dirty tablecloths? W: Just collect them in this big basket, and take the basket to the kitchen. Someone will take care of it. Employer and employee. Husband and wife. Workmates.
Why couldn’ t the man sleep last night?W: Didn’ t you sleep well last night? You don’ t look very well. M: In fact, I couldn’ t sleep last night because Martin was making so much noise. He should turn his radio down at night. He’ s so clumsy, too. He never does anything quietly. W: Is it Martin’ s turn to cook the meal tonight? M: Yes, it is! He should have washed the dishes last night too, but he didn’ t. W: He’ s so lazy. M: I’ m fed up with him. He left all his clothes and shaving things in the bathroom again. W: If he cleaned his room and tidied the bathroom more often, he would be a pleasant person to live with. Martin was too noisy. He was too worried. He quarreled with someone.
What is the woman planning?M: Good morning, Cindy. What are you doing? W: I’ m working out the details for the coming welcome party. It’ s time to do it now. M: Right. Let’ s talk about the place first. W: The dance hall of our school is a good place. Then we can order food from a restaurant and have the welcome party in the dance hall. The next one is the date. How about September 12? It’ s Saturday. M: That’s fine. W: Let’s think about invitations. M: I think we should invite dean, instructors, professors, and all new students. There will be about 50 people to come. So we will send out invitation cards this weekend. W: Right. Now let’ s count the cost. M: How about 10 dollars for each person? W: Paul, don’t forget I need some money to prepare masks, colored lights and gifts. M: Then 15 dollars? W: At least. So the total cost is about 750 dollars. A birthday party. A welcome party. If there is any single factor that makes success in living, it is the ability to be benefited by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to analyze (分析) defeat and actually learn something from it in his next undertaking (从事的工作). Wrongly taking defeat for failure, you are sure indeed to fail, for it isn’ t defeat that makes you fail: it is your own refusal to see the guide and encouragement to success in defeat. Defeats are nothing to be afraid of. They are common incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it, analyze it and learn why you failed. Defeat, in other words, can help to get rid of its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing can cause within us such a strong wish to succeed. If you let a baby grasp a stick and try to pull it away, he will hold it more and more tightly until his whole weight is hung up. It is this same reaction that should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you make full use of the power which defeat gives, you can compete with it far more than you are able to.

Cindy: Not really, I went to Shanghai in 2010, but I didn’ t have much time to do sightseeing. So I would really like to take this opportunity and take a look around the capital city of China. Bruce: You should do that. Where are you planning to go tomorrow? Cindy: A friend is taking me to see the Great Wall. Is it far from Beijing? Bruce: About an hour’ s drive to the west of Beijing. The part you are going to see is called Badaling, a small part of the original wall. Cindy: Since it’s called the Great Wall, it must be very long then. Bruce: It’ s over 13 , 000 miles long, but some parts are now in ruins or have disappeared. Cindy: Why? Bruce: After all, some of it was almost 2000 thousand years old. Its construction started in the Spring and Autumn Period. Its main purpose was for military defense—to fend off foreign invaders. Cindy: Wow, that’ s amazing. No wonder people call it “the eighth wonder of the world“. Bruce: The great wall that tourists see today was actually built in the Ming Dynasty, after which no new walls were built. Cindy: Now I’ m really looking forward to see it.
How does the woman probably feel?W: Stay away from me. I don’t want to talk to anyone now! M: But... W: No buts. Just leave me alone. Angry. Happy. Worried.
Why did the man go to Beijing?W: Have you ever been to China? M: Only once. I went to see an old friend who lives in Beijing. I found it very interesting and so different from England. W: I was told a lot of people rode bicycles to work. M: Yes. To tell you the truth, I was thinking of following suit when I came back to England. W: Riding a bicycle keeps people healthy, doesn’t it? M: It’ s certainly better exercise than sitting in a car or on a bus. W: Are there a lot of cars and buses in Beijing? M: Yes. W: What impression did you have of the traffic there? M: Maybe the traffic in Beijing is OK now, but last year I found it was always busy during the rush hours when people were coming and going to and from work. It nearly drove me crazy while sitting in a car not moving for a long time. To look at bicycles. To visit his old friend. To have a job interview.

The relationship between the home and market economies has gone through two distinct stages. Early industrialization began the process of transferring some production processes ( e. g. cloth making, sewing and canning foods) from the home to the marketplace. Though the home economy could still produce these goods, the processes were laborious (费力的) and the market economy was usually more efficient. Soon, the more important second stage was evident—the marketplace began producing goods and services that had never been produced by the home economy, and the home economy was unable to produce them ( e. g. electricity and electrical appliances, the automobile, advanced education, sophisticated (复杂的)medical care). In the second stage, the question of whether the home economy was less efficient in producing these new goods and services was irrelevant (无关紧要的) : if the family were to enjoy these results of industrialization, they would have to be got in the marketplace. The traditional ways of taking care of these needs in the home, such as in nursing the sick, became socially unacceptable ( and, in most serious cases, maybe less successful). Just as the appearance of the automobile made the use of horse-drawn carriage illegal and then impractical, and the television changed the radio from a source of entertainment to a source of background music, so most of the fruits of economic growth did not increase the options available to the home economy to either produce the goods or services or purchase them in the market. Growth brought with it increased variety in consumer goods, but not increased flexibility (灵活性) for the home economy in obtaining these goods and services. Instead, economic growth brought with it increased consumer reliance (依赖) on the marketplace. In order to consume these new goods and services, the family had to enter the marketplace as wage earners and consumers. The neoclassic (新古典主义的) model that views the family as deciding whether to produce goods and services directly or to purchase them in the marketplace is basically a model of the first stage. It cannot accurately be applied to the second ( and current) stage.
When I was young, bedtime was always my favorite part of the day. Wearing soft pajamas and with Tom, my stuffed monkey, in my arms, I felt no pressure at all. 【B1】______One night I ran up to Uncle Tom at a family party and told him I had named my monkey after him. His eyebrows wrinkled in confusion, then a chuckle (咯咯笑) escaped his lips. I guessed he didn’ t understand how important it was to me. Even if Uncle Tom didn’ t think my monkey was special, I certainly did.【B2】______My mother thought that Tom was the best-dressed stuffed animal in the world. Yes, he was certainly a fashionable creature. The strong cologne (古龙水) I used on him years ago made him still smell “pretty“. For a long time, Tom went everywhere with me.【B3】______But when I turned twelve, I realized I was too old for stuffed animals.【B4】______So I put him in the cupboard with the rest of my teddy bears and dolls. I begged him to understand why I was doing this, but at the same time I longed to talk to him again. It took me several years to realize that it was OK to miss Tom. I know now that maturity doesn’ t only mean growing up and taking on more responsibility. 【B5】______ [A]I named Tom after my uncle when I compared Tom’ s long arms and legs to his. [B]I thought people would think I was babyish. [C] Uncle Tom sent me another teddy bear. [D]I dressed him in a white baby nightgown. [E]It also means holding on to your childhood and acting young sometimes. [F] Maturity means put your dolls together and not play with them. [G]He was my best friend, and I told him everything.
