It is often difficult for a man to be quite sure what tax he ought to pay to the government because it depends on so many different things: whether the man is married: how many children he has: whether he supports any relations: how much he earns: how much interest he receives: how much he has spent on his house during the year, and so on and so forth. All this makes it difficult to decide exactly how much the tax is. There was a certain artist who was always very careful to pay the proper amount. One year, after posting his check as usual, he began to wonder if he had paid enough, and after a lot of work, with a pencil and paper, he decided that he had not. He believed that he owed the government something. He was just writing another check to send to the tax collector when the postman dropped a letter into the box at the front door. Opening it, the artist was surprised to find inside it a check for five pounds from the tax collector. The official explained that too much had been paid, and that therefore the difference was now returned to the taxpayer.

W: Well, have you got any better suggestions? M: I was thinking of Paris, or even London might be nice. W: I don’ t fancy London. I’ d rather go abroad for our holiday. Let’ s go to Paris. M: Right. Paris, here we come! When to have a holiday. Whether to go on a holiday. Where to spend their holiday.
How long will it take to get to the museum?W: Hey, taxi! Ah, great. Thanks for stopping. M: Where to? W: Well, I’ m going to the National Museum of Art. How long does it take to get there? M: Well, that all depends on the traffic, but it shouldn’ t take more than 30 minutes. W: Oh, by the way, do you know what time the museum closes? M: Well, I would guess around six o’ clock. Is this your first time to the city? W: Yeah. Do you know any good restaurants downtown that offer meals at a reasonable price? M: Umm, well, the Mexican restaurant, La Fajita. It’ s not as inexpensive as other places I know, but the service is better. More than 50 minutes. About 40 minutes. At most 30 minutes.

We may look at the world around us, but somehow we manage not to see it until whatever we’ ve become used to suddenly disappears.【C1】______, for example, the neatly-dressed woman I【C2】______to see—or to look at—on my way to work each morning. Something【C10】______?“ I thought to myself about her【C11】______Now that she was gone, I felt I had【C12】______her. I began to realize that part of our【C13】______life probably includes such chance meetings with familiar【C14】______: the milkman you see at dawn, the woman who【C15】______walks her dog along the street every morning, the twin brothers you see at the library. There is distinction between reading for information and reading for understanding. 【B1】______ The first sense is the one in which we read newspapers, magazines, or anything else. 【B2】______Such materials may increase our store of information, but they cannot improve our understanding. And clearly we don’ t have any difficulty in gaining the new information, for our understanding was equal to them before we started. Otherwise, we would have felt the shock of puzzlement. The second sense is the one in which we read something that at first we do not completely understand. Here the thing to be read is at the first sight better or higher than the reader. The writer is communicating something that can increase the reader’ s understanding.【B3】______Otherwise one person could never learn from another. Here “ learning“ means understanding more, not remembering more information. What are the conditions in this kind of reading? First, there is inequality in understanding. 【B4】______Besides, his book must convey something he possesses and his potential readers’ lack. Second, the reader must be able to overcome this inequality in some degree. And he should always try to reach the same level of understanding with the writer. If the equality is approached, success of communication is achieved. 【B5】______It is the least demanding and requires the least amount of effort. Everyone who knows how to read can read for entertainment if he wants to. In fact, any book that can be read for understanding or information can probably be read for entertainment as well. [A]The writer should have a better communicating skill. [B]Such communication between unequals must be possible. [C] We can get access to the content of those materials easily. [D]The writer must be “superior“ to the reader in understanding. [E]Thus, we can employ the word “reading“ in two distinct senses. [F] Reading for entertainment is capable of increasing our understanding for information. [G] Besides gaining information and understanding, there is another goal of reading-entertainment.

Whom did Marco Polo travel with? One of the most of famous travelers in all of history was Marco Polo. It is said that at the age of 17 , he left Italy with his father and uncle. It took them over three years to cross the mountains and deserts of Asia. In the year 1275 , they reached China. They stayed in China for 17 years, as guests of the emperor. He sent them on many trips around his empire. They found China far more advanced than Italy or any other country in Europe. After he returned to Italy, Marco Polo told many of his stories to a friend. The book, The Travels of Marco Polo, became the most popular book in Europe. People found it difficult to believe his stories of people, animals, places and things. These are a few of his descriptions: In one area of China, there were black stones. People dug them out of the ground. They lit the black stones and they burned very slowly, giving off heat. The people there used these stones to cook and to heat their homes. Most people believed Marco Polo’ s stories. But others told him that they did not believe his descriptions. He answered that he did not tell half of what he saw. His wife. His father. His son.

Jim was born after his elder brother and sister. He could learn many things from them. Soon, he developed his own way of doing things by developing his mind through his interest in creating stories. He read more than most children and he gathered his inspiration from history books. In school, his athletic interests were basketball and bike, especially high jump. When he found he could jump a little higher than most students, he decided that jumping over a high bar would be his specialty. Jim continued his learning interest in history which included serious college study, and a Master’ s degree. He is now a university professor at a small university. In the United States there are man-y schools that have history departments. There are large universities with as many as 60 thousand students and small universities with as few as 2, 000 students. His degree from a large university with a strong history department has helped him get a good job. Jim and Kate like cats. They have two of them and these cats are special members of the family. Their grey and white cat is Toby. The coal-black colored cat is called Buddha because he sits so quietly. Cats are popular with many people in America.
Animation means making things which are lifeless come alive and move. Since earliest times, people have always been astonished by movement. But not until this century have we managed to take control of movement, to record it, and in the case of animation, to retranslate it and recreate it. To do all this, we use a movie camera and a projector (放映机). In the world of cartoon animation, nothing is impossible. You can make the characters do exactly what you want them to do. A famous early cartoon character was Felix the Cat, created by Pat Sullivan in America in the early nineteen twenties. Felix was a wonderful cat. He could do all sorts of things no natural cat could do like taking off his tail, using it as a handle and then putting it back. Most of the great early animators lived and worked in America, the home of the moving picture industry. The famous Walt Disney cartoon characters came to life after 1928. Popeye the Sailor and his girlfriend Olive were born at Max Fleischer in 1933. But to be an animator, you don’ t have to be a professional (专业人士). It is possible for anyone to make a simple animated film without using a camera at all. All you have to do is to draw directly onto an empty film and then run the film through a projector.
