At present, it seems impossible to visit the satellites of other stars in search of life. Our present theories of physics indicate that it is impossible to move at a speed greater than that of light. Even at such a speed it would take many years to reach the nearest star that might have planets. Most of such stars are many lifetimes away. Perhaps someday we shall invent ways of traveling or sending messages that will allow man to find other living things in the universe. Even more interesting is the possibility that they may find us. If the steady-state theory of the universe is correct, there must be many “solar systems“ that are much older than ours. On some of these, intelligent life may have evolved long ago. If so, these creatures might be exploring the universe today. Serious scientific projects in recent years have been studying the risks with radio telescopes, hoping to find signals sent by such intelligent beings. It has been suggested that the puzzling quasars(类星体) might be the wakes(航迹) left by spaceships traveling faster than light. Thus far, we have found no definite evidence of other intelligent life in the universe. Perhaps we never shall. Yet the search and the hope will remain an exciting possibility for the future.

How can you be proud of something you’ve achieved through cheating? In the end, it’s not about deceiving your teachers or your parents, but about fooling yourself that you can do something you really can’t.

The Monday edition of the USAToday said sixty people have died in 84 crashes since 2000 —more than double the number of crashes during the previous five years. Its study found that more than 10 percent of the U.S. air ambulance helicopters crashed during that time and about two-thirds of the fatal crashes occurred in poor visibility. After reviewing hundreds of pages of documents and interviewing dozens of pilots, federal officials and executives with the companies that operate the flights, USAToday concluded that air ambulance companies have failed to make safety requirements that might have saved lives. It also found that helicopters were used excessively for patients who weren’t severely injured. But the newspaper also noted that there are studies which show that hundreds of lives are saved each year by speedy flights to hospitals. It pointed out, as well, that pilots operate in challenging situations, such as having to land on hospital roofs and being sent on life-and-death tasks to rural accidents scenes despite darkness or bad weather. “I don’t know anybody in this industry who isn’t devoted to safety and devoted to what we do.“ Ron Fergie, president of the National EMS Pilots Association, told USAToday.
