New technology links the world as never before. Our planet has shrunk. It’ s now a “global village“ where countries are only seconds away by fax or phone satellite link. And, of course, our ability to benefit from this high-tech communications equipment is greatly enhanced by foreign language skills. Deeply involved with this new technology is a breed of modern businesspeople who have a growing respect for the economic value of doing business abroad. In modern markets, success overseas often helps support domestic business efforts. Overseas assignments are becoming increasingly important to advancement within executive ranks. The executive stationed in another country no longer need fear being “out of sight and out of mind“. He or she can be sure that the overseas effort is central to the company’ s plan for success, and that promotions often follow or accompany an assignment abroad. If an employee can succeed in a difficult assignment overseas, superiors will have greater confidence in his or her ability to cope back in the United States where cross-cultural considerations and foreign language issues are becoming more and more prevalent(普遍的). Thanks to a variety of relatively inexpensive communications devices with business applications, even small businesses in the United States are able to get into international markets. English is still the international language of business. But there is an ever-growing need for people who can speak another language. A second language isn’ t generally required to get a job in business, but having language skills gives a candidate the edge when other qualifications appear to be equal. The employee posted abroad who speaks the country’ s principal language has an opportunity to fast-forward certain negotiations, and can have the cultural insight to know when it is better to move more slowly. The employee at the home office who can communicate well with foreign clients over the telephone or by fax machine is an obvious asset to the firm.

A young father was visiting an old neighbor. They were standing in the old man’ s garden, and talking about children. The young man said, “How strict should parents be with their children?“ The old man pointed to a string between a big strong tree and a thin young one. “Please untie that string, “ he said. The young man untied it, and the young tree bent over to one side. “Now tie it again, please, “ said the old man, “but first pull the string tight so that the young tree is straight again. “ The young man did so. Then the old man said, “There, it is the same with children. You must be strict with them, but sometimes you must untie the string to know how they are getting on. If they are not yet able to stand alone, you must tie the string tight again. But when you find they are ready to stand alone, you can take the string away. “
In a country that defines itself by ideals, not by shared blood, who should be allowed to come to work to live here? In the wake of the Sept. 11 attracts these questions have never seemed more pressing. On December 11, 2001, as part of the effort to increase homeland security, federal and local authorities in 14 states staged “Operation Safe Travel“-raids on airports to arrest employees with false identification(身份证明). In Salt Lake City there were 69 arrests. But those captured were anything but terrorists, most of them illegal immigrants from Central or South America. Authorities said the undocumented worker’ s illegal status made them open to blackmail by terrorists. Many immigrants in Salt Lake City were angered by the arrests and said they felt as if they were being treated like disposable goods. Mayor Anderson said those feelings were justified to a certain extent. “We’ re saying we want you to work in these places, we’ re going to look the other way in terms of what our laws are, and then when it’ s convenient for us, or when we can try to make a point in terms of national security, especially after Sept. 11, then you’ re disposable. There are whole families being uprooted for all of the wrong reasons, “ Anderson said. If Sept. 11 had never happened, the airport workers would not have been arrested and could have gone on quietly living in American, probably indefinitely. Ana Castro, a manager at a Ben & Jerry’ s ice cream shop at the airport had been working 10 years with the same false Social Security card when she was arrested in the December airport raid. Now she and her family are living under the threat of deportation(驱逐出境). Castro’ s case is currently waiting to be settled. While she awaits the outcome, the government has granted her permission to work here and she has returned to her job at Ben & Jerry’ s.
