NO CASH, NO PROBLEM As technology continues to develop, people are changing the way they pay for things. Many of us have a cash card or a credit card, but more and more people carry a cashless card—a computerized “smart card. “ These lucky people never have to look for money, or carry a-round a heavy wallet full of coins. With these cards we are one step closer to a more convenient and cashless society. The idea behind cashless cards is to get rid of small change and to save time. Many American and British students use these cards to buy food or drinks at college cafeterias and even to ride buses. These cards also act as ID cards. Students use the cards to access buildings and computer files, or check out books from the library. College cafeteria staff say the cards have reduced waiting time at checkouts on campus. Users can put money from their bank accounts onto smart cards at special machines on or around campus. There is one big problem with smart cards. If an owner loses his or her smart card, the cash that is stored on it can be used by whoever finds it. However, to protect the user, most cards have the owner’s photograph on them. Summary:

Finally, the Grassmarket is an old part of the city which is full of cafes, bars and restaurants. 44)______. Edinburgh has a large student population and the nightlife is excellent. Clubs usually stay open until three in the morning. You can hear live music in many of the pubs, choose from a number of first-class cinemas or go to a “ceilidh“ (a traditional Scottish dance). 45)______. The best time to come to the city is in August. Every year, thousands of people visit the Edinburgh Festival, the world’s biggest arts festival. With concerts, opera, theatre and art exhibitions, there is something for everyone. For winter visitors, Hogmanay (the Scottish New Year) is also an incredible experience that you will never forget.

Oxford Street, in England’s capital city, is not known for cultural events. But for ten days in early 2001, it was the address for a fascinating art “performance“ : Michael Landy’ s Break Down. Inside an old department store, the 37-year old artist destroyed every one of his 7, 006 personal possessions. The Break Down took Landy three years to plan. His socks, his fridge, his passport—everything he owned was numbered and labeled. The details were entered into a computer. Then a huge industrial machine for breaking things was moved into the empty C&A clothes store. Finally, on 24 February 2001, Landy and ten assistants in blue uniforms began breaking each listed item. One assistant pulled apart Landy’ s Saab car. Another tore up Landy’ s family photographs. Others “worked“ on his furniture and clothes. Then the pieces were placed in plastic yellow boxes for Landy to push into the machine. He finished with personal items that he could never replace; his paintings, his father’s old coat. The result was six tons of useless rubbish. Landy said he didn’t want to make people feel bad. But many of the 45, 000 people that came to see the Break Down were unhappy. Some felt it wasn’t right to throw away things that the poor could use. Others said Landy was doing the whole thing to become famous. Almost everybody, however, was excited in some way by the event. “What was he trying to say?“ they wondered. Landy gave a number of different answers to this question. “The only thing you can take away from this, “ he once said, “ is your experience of it. That’s the most important thing to me; it’s not for sale. “

Acupuncture—it worked for me Pam, 25, woke up one Monday morning with an incredibly painful arm and shoulder. “ I hadn’t done anything to it, I just must have slept awkwardly, “ she says. “ I couldn’t move it more than four inches up or to the side. “ Her doctor suggested it might be fluid on the bone and gave her anti-inflammatory tablets and pain-killers. He said if the pain did not go away she would probably need injections into the joint and physiotherapy. Pam says, “The pain-killers were so strong that they made me dozy and sick, so I stopped taking them. By Friday morning I had a severe headache, the shoulder pain and a feeling like a really bad hangover. A neighbour happened to be an acupuncturist and I went to ask advice. I wasn’t happy with the idea of injections when my doctor wasn’t even sure what the problem was. The acupuncturist treated Pam immediately. “ She put a needle in my shin. I didn’t look—I was afraid. I felt a small prick. She asked me to move my arm and I couldn’t. She twisted the needle and I felt a dull ache, and suddenly I could move my arm. The pain just completely went away, “ says Pam. The acupuncturist then inserted needles between Pam’s thumb and forefinger and in the bend of her elbow, and connected them to an electrical box to provide pulsating stimulation. Pam has had no problems since “ I would recommend it to anyone, “ she says. Summary: One Monday morning, Pam【51】______ in her arm and shoulder because she had slept awkwardly. Although her doctor【52】______what the problem was, he suggested that she would need【53】______if the pain didn’t go away. It won the Cannes Palme d’ Or Award in 1995 and it remains many people’s favourite film. It stared Miki Manojlovic, Lazar Ristovski and Mirjana Jokovic. The soundtrack was written by Goran Bregovic and it’s the most powerful one I have ever heard. 44. ______The film is mainly about friendship, love, politics and war. It’s set mostly in Belgrade between 1941 and the 1990s. Marko (Manojlovic) and Blacky (Ristovski) are two friends in love with Natalija (Jokovic). When Belgrade is bombed, Marko and Blacky have a plan; Blacky will produce weapons underground and Marko will sell them. But Marko becomes successful, marries Natalija and doesn’t tell Blacky that the war has ended. For fifty years, Blacky and others continue to live underground. They live in a “false“ world. But in the end, they discover that it’s a lot safer than the real world outside. 45.______ It’s a good film to watch because everybody understands it in different ways. It’s entertaining because it’s interesting, funny and sad at the same time.
