W: Well, it’s a good chance to show them how much I know, what I can do. And they can see for themselves how good my English is, too! Then, whenever the next management position comes up, they’ll know I’m the perfect choice! M: Well, in that case, go for it! And let’s go out for dinner tonight to celebrate! W: OK. W: Good morning, Mr. Smith. What can I do for you? M: I feel there’s something wrong with me, but I’m not sure. W: Could you explain more to me? M: I got a runny nose, watery eyes, sore throat and other symptoms on Monday and they last the following five days. Since I’m terribly busy with my work, I won’t have time to see the doctor. But when I do have time to see the doctor on weekends, the symptoms will disappear suddenly! W: And you will get the same symptoms again the next Monday? M: Exactly. W: How long have you been like this? M: About one month. W: Did anything special happen during the past four weeks? M: Nothing special. Oh, wait! My company has moved into a new building. Living in a foreign country is fun, but it isn’ t always easy. There are many differences between cultures and although some of these differences are unimportant, they can cause a lot of embarrassments. I spoke to a few foreign friends about how they experienced culture shock in China. [*] Aubin arrived two months ago from Europe to take part in a language programme in Shanghai. Before he left, he was actually taught the differences between European and Chinese cultures, including everything from table manners to classroom behavior. However, some things have still taken him by surprise. For example, he couldn’ t understand why waiters did not want to accept the tips he gave them after meals in restaurants. I had to explain to him that people don’t usually tip in China and that this comes from the Confucian(儒家的, 孔子的)idea that one must avoid accepting any undue (不适当的)income. Another friend, Julia, came to Guangzhou from London to teach at a language school. After a month, she told me that she was really let down by her students. I asked her why and she told me that they were so quiet that she was the only person talking in class and it felt like the children were punishing her by making her talk to the walls! I explained to her that the children were simply respectful, but she said that it would be more respectful if they answered her questions. And it is not only the West and the East that have cultural differences. Even Korea and China, two countries that are very close to each other, have differences too. “I thought Chinese and Korean people were similar in some ways, “ said my friend Ji-Hyun in perfect Chinese, “but I was wrong. In ancient times the Chinese used to take their shoes off before entering a house. They don’t do that anymore, but Korean people still do! I keep getting that wrong even though I’ ve been here for five years!“ Luckily, whether we take our shoes off or not, or leave unnecessary tips, the world still runs perfectly. In my opinion, cultural differences should simply be seen as a way of making life interesting. Imagine how boring it would be if we all did everything in exactly the same way! Learning to understand and respect differences is, after all, what life is all about. Questions 56 ~ 60 Complete the chart with no more than three words from the passage. [*]

Therefore, you become more sensitive to vibrations so that you don’t miss anything. 【B1】______ One of the most important aspects of doing business internationally is being able to speak other languages. For this reason, there is a current boom(兴起)in language learning for business people. But unless they can speak a foreign language really well, it is best to save it for socializing. [*] 【B2】______ But actions speak louder than words, and psychologists say that your body language is much more important than what you say. Doing the wrong thing, making eye contact, touching, using people’ s first name, even how you eat and drink—can all be hazardous (有危险的)for people who are unfamiliar with certain cultures. 【B3】______ Cultures can be divided into “ low context“ and “ high context“. In low context cultures such as North America, Britain, Sweden and Germany, people say things very plainly, and rely on clear verbal (口头的)communication. High context cultures such as France, Japan, Spain, Saudi Arabia, China and South Korea often use silence or hand signals to communicate, and this can sometimes be as important as speaking. 【B4】______ Shaking hands is often the most common form of greeting people, but even this can create problems. In Japan, people bow to each other. In England, people shake hands firmly—but not very often—while in places like Italy and France people shake hands all the time but not as firmly as the English. The Germans and the Danish nod their heads while they shake hands, as a mark of respect, while people in Mediterranean countries sometimes lean their heads backwards while doing the same thing. 【B5】______ People from “low context“ cultures tend to look into other people’s eyes, but in “high context“ cultures such as the Chinese and the Japanese, this can be interpreted as aggressive(攻击性的)behaviour. As a rule, though, close physical greetings such as kissing are not a good idea. For example, the British kiss each other once, on the right cheek, the French kiss each other twice, first on the left cheek and then on the right, but in some cultures, especially in the Middle East, they kiss up to four times and still shake hands! There are other factors that can change our mood but it seems we have some ability to improve how we feel by controlling what we put on our plate. Does your diet affect your mood?
