1. M: I saw you having a drink with a young man at the bar yesterday Who is he? W: It is my elder brother. M: But you two don’t look much alike. W: We did when we were small kids, but not anymore. Q: What does the woman mean? 2. M: Excuse me. Can you tell me the password for your hotel’s Wi-Fi? W: It’s 68156608. M: Sorry, I didn’t quite catch it. W: It’s 68156608. Q: What is the correct password for the hotel’s Wi-Fi? 3. W: What music are you listening to? The beat is so strong that I can hardly concentrate on my work. M: No problem. I’ll switch to something softer. Q: What will the man probably do? 4. W: Do you think it’s a good idea to send our son to a college in the United States? M: No. His proficiency of English is disappointingly poor. He can hardly make it. W: But he can improve his English much faster there. M: What about tuition fees? The total cost will be roughly 50, 000 dollars a year. It doesn’t pay. Q: What’s the man’s attitude to his son studying abroad? 5. W: Oh, I was so upset. My biochemistry professor denied me a chance to explain why I missed my presentation. It was because I had a bad stomachache. M: That doesn’t seem fair. I would feel the same if I were you. Q: What does the man imply about the woman? She had a drink with her elder brother. She has already given up drinking. She used to look like her elder brother. She didn’t drink with her elder brother.
6. M: I hear you have just purchased a bigger apartment in a good neighborhood. W: Yes, It is more spacious, but I will be living far away from my parents, and I need to take care of them. M: That means you have to spend a lot of time on the road each week. W: That’s right. I wish I could live much closer to them. Q: What does the woman think of the new apartment? 7. W: Nick, do you often read in the library? M: Yes, I go there almost every day. I believe reading is essential to our study. W: You said it. Reading gives us a variety of benefits. M: I’m quite pleased that we are on the same page here. Q: What does the man mean? 8. M: I thought you had finished your school assignment, so I got two tickets for this evening’s concert. W: It’s not done yet, but it is not due until next Friday. Q: What can be inferred about the woman? 9. M: Professor, I have read some books on English grammar, but my grammar remains very poor. What do you recommend I should do? W: I don’t believe in grammar books or grammar exercises. The best approach is to read extensively while observing how English is actually used by native speakers. M: I hope this new strategy will work out for me. Q: What does the woman suggest the man do to improve his grammar? It is perfect in each possible way. It can bring many good neighbors. It is nearer to her parents’ home. It has advantages and disadvantages.
Admission to the doctoral program in School of Business is highly competitive at the University of Chicago. About 20 outstanding students with a potential to distinguish themselves in research are admitted each autumn. Reviewers evaluate the applicant’s essays, academic background and performance, research interest and potential, prior exposure to academic research, strength of recommendations, and standardized test scores. The application deadline is December 15 of each year. The application for Fall 2018 is currently closed. The application for Fall 2019 will open by September 1, 2018. International applicants are encouraged to submit their information earlier. Applicants will be notified of their admissions decision by e-mail no later than early March. Admitted students enroll the following autumn. Applicants must hold a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. Non-US residents should look at the list of degrees recognized by the University of Chicago as acceptable equivalents. This program trains prospective scholars to become highly skilled and innovative researchers. This is a full-time course of study. Most students take five years to complete degree requirements and defend their respective thesis. Students begin active research at an early stage and work closely with faculty throughout the program. They are also quickly drawn into the school’s intellectual environment by participating in workshops, where the work of fellow researchers is vigorously discussed and debated. As with the other degree programs, the PhD curriculum is highly flexible. Within the scope of general requirements, students can design programs to suit their individual research interests and educational backgrounds. Q10: What students are likely to be admitted to this doctoral program? Q11: When will applicants receive the admission decision? Q12: What is discussed or debated in workshops? Those with a three-year bachelor’s degree. Those with a master’s degree or its equivalents. Those with a potential to excel academically. Those who are new to academic research.

Tourism can be sustainable...so that potential______(2 words) on the host community do not surpass the financial benefits.Tourism can bring many economic and social benefits, particularly in rural areas and developing countries. Tourism can be sustainable if it is carefully managed so that potential negative effects on the host community do not surpass the financial benefits. Tourism creates jobs, both through direct employment within the tourism industry and indirectly in sectors such as retail and transportation. When these people spend their wages on goods and services, more jobs are created. The tourism industry also provides opportunities for small-scale businesses, which is especially important in rural communities, and generates extra tax revenues, such as airport and hotel taxes, which can be used for schools, housing and hospitals. Improvements to basic facilities also benefit the local community. Tourism encourages the preservation of traditional customs, folk music and festivals that might otherwise have been lost. Interchanges between hosts and guests create a better cultural understanding and can also help raise global awareness of issues such as poverty and human rights abuses. Tourism, particularly ecotourism, helps promote conservation of wildlife and natural resources such as rain forests, as these are now regarded as tourism assets. It also helps generate funding for maintaining animal preserves and marine parks through entrance charges and guide fees. By creating alternative sources of employment, tourism reduces problems such as over-fishing and deforestation in developing nations.
