What does the man want to do?W: What? You want to leave? I thought you enjoyed living here.
M: Yes, I do. But I don’ t belong here. I want to go back to New Jersey next week. I have made up my mind.
W: Well, if I can’ t change your mind, I will make you a huge feast before you go! Is this Sunday all right?
M: I’ m free at the weekend. If it’ s anything like your mom’ s birthday feast, then that’ s a lot of work. I don’t want to bring you that much trouble.
W: No trouble at all. Go back to New Jersey. Celebrate the woman’ s birthday. Buy a birthday gift for the woman’ s mother.

Where should the students go if the fire alarm rings?M: Are you ready for your first day here, Miss Thomson?
W: I think so. But I do have a question about the fire alarm. What should I do if it rings?
M: First, give your students some instructions. Tell them to leave the classroom and walk as a class to the parking lot behind the gym.
W: Should they bring their backpacks?
M: It is not necessary. Safety comes first.
W: OK. What should I take when I leave the classroom?
M: Be sure to take your name list. Once we get to the parking lot, we need to figure out if everyone is there.
W: Why is that necessary?
M: Well, if it were a real emergency, we would need to know if there were still any students in the building. If it were a drill, students may take advantage of it and enjoy themselves in the park behind the school or the coffee shop around the corner.
W: I see. Thanks a lot. The gym around the corner. The park behind the school. The parking lot behind the gym.

Where are the speakers going to stay?M: Is there anywhere you’ d like to go this weekend?
W: Nowhere in particular. Do you have anything in mind?
M: Well, John and I are going up north. Would you like to join us? We’ re going to stay at Mary White’s.
W: Is there enough room for everybody?

What does Megan Smith do?M: Welcome to “See the World“. Megan Smith, our travel writer for Australia, Switzerland and New Zealand, is here to tell us about a place she’ s been torecently. Hi, Megan. Welcome to the program.
W: Hello. It’ s great to be here.
M: Tell us where you went, Megan.
W: Well, I went to Wanaka, which is a small-size and really beautiful town in New Zealand. It’ s on the southern shores of Lake Wanaka. It’ s also fairly close to Queenstown. In fact it’ s about an hour and a half from Queenstown.
M: Is that by train?
W: No, that’ s driving. I flew to Queenstown in the first place, and then drove my Jeep to Wanaka, although there is a regular bus service too.
M: And why is Wanaka such a great place to go?
W: Well, there are lakes, rivers, and mountains. The scenery is really varied and really beautiful. It’ s really a wonderful experience. A writer. A hostess. A tour guide.

What is one of the purposes of this speech?Welcome, everybody. I’ m here to talk about our telephone helpline. The helpline is a free service for anyone who needs help with looking after a child. We have hundreds of trained volunteers. Our operators lend support to over 400, 000 parents and families each year by providing information for anyone in a parenting role. We’ re always looking for additional helpline operators and new volunteers are always welcome. So how does one go about becoming a volunteer? Well, it’ s really quite simple. After an interview, all volunteers will take a ten-week training course. Upon successfully completing this course, volunteers will be asked to go to a particular call center. It is necessary for volunteers to be able and willing to visit their call centers at least once a week. Volunteers are expected to give a minimum of four hours of their time a week dealing with calls. Currently, there are two call centers operating in London and another half a dozen centers in other places of England. Well, that’ s all I wanted to say. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me. And for any of you who are seriously considering becoming volunteers, there are application forms on the table in front of the stage. To persuade parents to call the helpline. To tell people how to teach the children. To invite people to become the volunteers.

Did you examine your paper money closely? See if you can locate a $5, $10, or $20 bill printed before 1964 and marked “Federal Reserve Note“ over the portrait. In the upper-left portion above the seal, a statement written in fine print says that the note is legal tender (法定货币) and that “it is redeemable (可兑现的)in lawful money at the United States Treasury (美国财政部) or at any Federal Reserve Bank (联邦储备银行). “ Does this mean that the bill is not lawful? At the bottom center the same bill says, “ Will pay to the bearer on demand X dollars. “ Does this mean that your X-dollar bill is not X dollars?
Much confusion exists about the real nature of money. Many people think that money has no value unless it is backed by gold or silver. They think that the Federal Reserve note is only a symbol for money, and that real money is the metal backing the note. Some people look on money as wealth and believe that it must have intrinsic value.
If we were to study the history of money, we would find that in different places and at different times a variety of things have been used as money. Cattle, shell, beads (珠子) , tobacco leaves, and various metals—including iron, zinc (锌) , bronze (青铜) , and copper—have all been used as a basis of exchange. The precious metals, particularly silver and gold, have proved most satisfactory for this purpose and have been most commonly used in modern times.
Until early 1968, the United States backed its Federal Reserve notes with 25 percent gold, but this did not mean that citizens could use gold as money or convert paper dollars to gold. Clearly, it is not what money is but what it does that is important.

It doesn’ t matter when or how long a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That’s what all doctors thought, until they heard about Al Herpin. Al Herpin, it was said, never slept. Could this be true? The doctors decided to see this strange themselves.
Al Herpin was ninety years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw Al Herpin sleeping. Actually, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Al Herpin got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Herpin remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was bom. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure.

Millions of hamburgers are eaten by people in every connor of the world every day. Together with hot dogs and Coca-Cola, hamburgers have been the most important American contribution (贡献) to international eating habits.
The name “hamburger“ has nothing to do with ham (火腿). It is believed that the hamburger was first brought to the United States by Germans from the city of Hamburg some time in the 1850s. From then on the hamburger became a kind of popular American fast food.
Now young people in Asia, Europe and South America have learned to eat while on the move: a hamburger in one hand and a soft drink in the other. There have been cries to anger from Italy and Spain about the shortening of the usual lunch break. Instead, young people have discovered a lunch for which they don’ t have to stop at all.
However, there are clouds over the hamburger’ s world. People who concern about health dislike the high animal fat in the hamburger. They think the time saved seems a high price to pay for poor health. The packages in which hamburgers are usually served are causing serious pollution problems in many large cities. Big hamburger companies are destroying large areas of South American rainforest to produce the cheap meat they need. So, will the hamburger celebrate its next century?

Kids with special needs refer to any kid who might need extra help because of a medical, emotional , or learning problem. For example, kids who cannot walk need wheelchairs. They not only need equipment that helps them get around, but they might need to have ramps (坡道) or elevators available. 【B1】______
Kids with an illness would have special needs, too.【B2】______Kids with sight problems might need Braille books to read. Kids with hearing problems might need hearing aids.
【B3】______It might be harder to do normal things, like learning to read or just getting around the school. The good news is that parents, doctors, nurses, teachers, and others can help. The goal is to help kids be as independent as possible.
Other kids can also be a big help. How? By being a friend. Kids who use a wheelchair or have lots of health problems want friends just as you do. But meeting people and making friends can be difficult.【B4】______Be sure to tell a teacher if you see someone being bullied (欺辱) or teased.
【B5】______Being friendly to kids with special needs is one of the best ways to be helpful. As you get to know them, they may help you understand what it’ s like to be in their shoes. And you’ll be helping fill a very special need, one that everybody has—the need for good friends.
[A] Some kids might laugh at or make fun of them.
[B] It is good manners to offer help to kids with special needs.
[C]Life can be challenging for a kid with special needs.
[D]They also might need to get a special bus to school.
[E] They might need medicine or other help as they go about their daily activities.
[F] Also, try to be helpful if you know someone with special needs.
[G]Someone could have trouble with anxiety, but you wouldn’ t know it unless told about it.

Suzie: It’ s so good to have some chocolate after such a long day. I wonder how they could be made so delicious.
Charles: They are made from Cocoa beans, grown on a small tropical plant called the Cocoa tree.
Suzie: So it can only be grown in the tropical countries?
Charles: Yes, in Central and South America, and other tropical areas. As a matter of fact, 70% of the world’ s Cocoa trees are grown in South Africa. Cocoas beans are the seeds of the tree. Unlike the fruit, it’ s actually quite bitter.
Suzie: Really? Then how does it become the sweet chocolate then?
Charles: The Cocoa beans are roasted so that it dries and the flavor becomes stronger. After that, the beans would get cracked to leave out the outer shells, and then ground to a paste.
Suzie: Can the paste be eaten?
Charles: If we remove the fat from the paste, we then get cocoa, which is a favorite drink in winter. But if we want to make chocolate bars, we still need to add things like sugar, cocoa butter, vanilla , and milk. When this mixture get heated and cooled for several times, it gets really smooth and can be made into the chocolate bars that you love so much.
Suzie: Wow.
